Overall, if your car has the old-school-looking side-button wide shifter knob like mine did, I can absolutely recommend this product. I would prefer this method to release the shift lockout, rather than lifting the whole knob up. What I liked about it was that the aluminum SLEEVE below the shift knob could slide up into the knob in order to put the car into reverse. My mk4 TDI had a B&M short shifter installed, with a heavy weight aluminum shift knob. Turns out I didn't have it tightened down, so I've been experimenting with adding plastic washers/shims to the top of the threaded shaft to give me the proper spacing to tighten down where I want it, since I can't remove the coin.

I fucked up during the install and applied the coin once I thought I had the seam where I wanted it with the knob tightened down. They have also done blue Alcantara and red in the past, but I think they were limited-run. They have other versions of this knob - one with Alcantara instead of perforated leather, and versions with black aluminum instead of shiny. It's actually an engraved and hand-painted looking finish, and I actually greatly prefer it this way. I expected the coin to have a flat or slightly rounded, gloss finish. Installed at the proper level, and with the set screws installed properly, this is not an issue. I need to get a slightly larger boot (I plan on getting a manual-transmission shifter boot and removing the gear indicator panel anyway) I had installed the boot too high on the shifter. When putting the car into park or sport, resistance is felt as it pulls on the boot.

  • The shifter sits at the same height as the OEM shifter, but has to LIFT UP to release the lock - so my OEM shifter boot isn’t QUITE large enough.
  • So I had to “make my own” plastic washers. I must have touched it wrong, and it snapped off and fell into the depths of my car.
  • The included threaded shifter shaft that the knob screws into seems to be made out of very thin metal, and has a thick plastic washer glued to the top (to provide some wiggle room when tightening.
  • Properly installed, the knob does not allow twisting of the car's shift linkage. This was also due to using the set screws wrong. If they offered more application-specific versions of the kit, they could integrate a support for this. Twist it hard enough without holding the lower collar still and you’ll snap your car’s plastic shift linkage. If you twist the knob, it WILL twist, and you’re twisting the car’s actual shift lever mechanism.
  • The knob has no support to prevent twisting, unlike the OEM knob.
  • Set screws basically require loctite, and none is included.
  • **Turns out there is a simple method for this)
  • Seemingly absolutely no way to remove the shifter “coin” after it’s been applied.
  • Installation instructions are subpar, hard to find, and easy to confuse (IMO).
  • Immediately knew what I was talking about, didn’t ask for any order information, didn’t have to wait on hold.
  • Phone support was helpful with the install when I ran into a snag.
  • Allen wrench included with kit (necessary for install).
  • Universal nature of the install kit is nifty.
  • Shift mechanism (lifting the knob) is positive and consistent.
  • They have a few other coins also available (such as “direct shift” for a DSG application). Typically I do not like aftermarket logos showing in/on my cars, but I have happily made an exception for this. The included Black Forest Industries coin looks great, reminiscent of the classic Wolfsburg logo (IMO). Black Forest Industries has nothing to do with this review.

Disclosure: I paid full price for the item and purchased through a reseller (ECS Tuning). Second picture is the "before" picture, obviously. Post-install, I love the way it looks and feels. I got it for my 2008 Audi S6, but this exact same item would fit basically any automatic VW as well. It is specifically designed for automatic transmission applications, including DSG. So I recently purchased Black Forest Industries’s (?) “GS2” shift knob. When posting an image for a theme day, please tag the submission with the appropriate link flair.
